Props

For our film we need a few props to make our film more realistic and make it seem a more authentic crime film opening scene. We want things to look realistic so we will be putting fake blood onto our dead bodies to make it look real. Because we want the murders to be linked, we need to have something on the bodies which is distinctive on all of them, and we could do this by using the fake blood.

Another prop that we may need is a body bag to put the dead bodies in and to cover them up when the main character has arrived at the scene and is investigating it This way it would make it seem more realistic, in the fact that it will look like a crime scene. We can either use a proper body bag or try and use a sleeping bag, however this could make it less authentic so this may not be the best thing to use.

Another prop we will need is police line tape. Again, this is to make each scene as realistic as possible. The tape will make it seem as though the area inside is off limits because of what has happened.

We will also be using a phone at the start of the opening to show the maker of the film for example 'universal studios', as we believe this a good way to incorporate the makers of the film. The phone we will be using is a samsung galaxy S3, and the reason for this is because it can show the picture of the company as well as the name of the company, and then from this opening shot it will show the main character of the film as he is answering the phone.

Another prop that we want to use is a boiler suit for the forensic scientist as there will be one collecting evidence at the scene as there normally is a forensic scientist in a crime movie so will have to buy a suit for someone to wear to make our movie more authentic.

music

Music

we looked at different types of music to put into our opening sequence and we found two good pieces of music which fit our genre which we have chosen.  dirt rhodes was one of the two pieces we chose and the other one was Groove Grove.

Dirt Rhodes

The first one dirt rhodes is one of the two that we have norrowed it down to. The reason we liked this piece of music was because of the tempo as it sounded like a crime film piece of music and made it feel like it belonged in a crime scene opening.
The music genre is blues and i think blues is what best fits in with crime. Dirt Rhodes to me felt dark and mysterious with a bit of an upbeat tempo which is what you want in a crime film, and that fits our story quite well. To me it also feels quite like it should be the music to something thats a crime series like life on mars or something. We could show our character walking and i think this music fits in well with that, as it's got a walking beat to it. It adds a bit of mystery to it, and i think with the walking shots, or the shots where we show the character getting to the crime scenes, the music fits in really well to it, and so i think this could be the better form of music. Also it is exactly 2:00 minutes long, which is how long our opening film has to be, and so we can use the whole song which is a benefit.

Groove Grove

We also liked this tune. We felt that this tune was similar to 'Dirt Rhodes' because they both had a mysterious but adventurous tone to them. This also has a good tone to it. Again, you could use it in the walking scenes, and it does have a sort of crime/gangster feel to it. However the reason why we are not using it is because of the fact that it is longer than 2 minutes. This is bad because when are opening sequence is over the music wouldn't have finished and too the audience it will feel as though it has just stopped all together, and it wont feel professional. And so because of this reason alone, i don't think it is a good idea to use this tune. And so because of that we are going to use 'Dirt Rhodes'.

Location

We are going to be using different locations in our film. The reason for this is because we want all three murders to be in different locations. This is to build tension and the fact that the main character believes that their is a serial killer on the lose.

One of the locations is in a field, and we think something like this (left) is a good location. The field is a big size and would be a good location because of this. It is also right next to houses, and because we are starting in the characters house it would make it tense because the murder would have been near his front door. Location is very important in films, and so we have to make sure that we have chosen suitable locations and i think we have done that for the first crime scene.

This is the second location for our second dead body, and it is a car park however this may not be the car park we use to film the scene. We have chosen to use this location as because we believe it will e a good location to film a crime scene and to also represent a crime film well and make it seem authentic.

This is the third location for a murder as it is in a remote location away from the mainland and busy streets and roads, and is a good place to put a dead body that has been murder.  Also other reason is because it is quite it is quite spooky and looks a bit rough, and these are things we need to build up the tension, and get the audience to ask questions like, who murdered them?, why did they commit the murders?...

Ginger snaps analysis

Ginger Snaps

The opening film to Ginger Snaps has given us a real inspiration into what we are considering doing for our film. Me and my partner decided that we should maybe do a murder scene investigation for our opening scene. And the reason why i want to look at ginger snaps is because it shows things like dead bodies, and this is what we have in mind. We don't want to show the murders, just the bodies and maybe like an under cover detective trying to find who the murderer is.

This shot is a good example of building up the tension and the nerves. It shows a dead body underneath a car. As the audience, you want to know why shes there, how she got their, who killed her and who is she. Like i said, we want to use murder in our movie, but we don't necessarily want to show the murder. We want it to be a little like this shot, where you do potentially see the body, and it makes you ask questions like who, what, where, when and why?

This shot shows a good transaction between two shot, in which we were thinking of using to show flashbacks in our movie, and this transition could work well to achieve this. Also this shot is good as it goes from the two murders very cleanly which is good from changing the scene and locations very quickly and cleanly.

This shot showed me the importance of props if you need to use them. This shot here shows a body bag, and it tells us a lot. It tells about that someone has been murdered and left in the boot of a car. You get all this by simply looking at the fact that there is a body bag and the body is in the boot. It has showed me that if we are to use props, we need to make sure they look realistic, and fit in with the story.

Analysis of a film

One film that i have been looking at for inspiration for my moving opening is dexter. I have been studying the opening title seen and there is a few ideas that i liked from it. Things like the camera angles it uses are good as it has good close ups on the food that he is eating and it representing him killing somebody which i think is good as he hasn't actually killed anyone but it is misdirecting the audience watching which i think is good.

For example this shot is particularly good as it shows the misdirection as it shows the ketchup being squirted onto the egg, but you cant see the bottle so it makes it look like blood is falling on the egg in the eyes of the audience watching.
This is also good as it shows one of the people name that has helped made the film and it fits in this shot very well with its colour and positioning.

This is another good shot because of the lighting that is used in the shot, as the close up shows a good side to him as he is stopping murderers. But also in the shot it shows his dark side as he is a serial killer who is killing the murderers, so the lighting is very good as it is showing the divide in his life from the good thing he trying to do but in the wrong way he is doing it.

Also the music that is used all the way through the opening scene is very productive which fits the opening sequence as there is something always going on which fits it well as it accompanies all the shots being shown.  It is also upbeat as it is being played by a guitar and other strings which is gives it the upbeat tempo which i like.

So for my opening film sequence and i am hoping to take some inspiration from this opening sequence because i believe it has some good ideas and good camera shots that it uses.

Introduction

For our media coursework i am going to be doing a film. I am doing it with Toby, and at the begining we have to choose a film genre to be able to fufil the task. The task is to make a 2 minute opening sequence to a film.

The type of film generes that we have thought of doing are:
Comedy- an example is the hangover -

Crime & Gangster- an example is the godfather

horror- an example is insidious

sport- an example is goal

With the comedy, we think this would be good because not many people have done this before, and there is alot of choices for an opening sequence that we can choose. Also there are a lot comedy films which we can get ideas from. However we think it might be quite hard to make, because we might have to make it funny, and if it not, then it wont represent the comedy.

Crime and gangster was also one of our choises. This is the one which we think we are going to use. This is because it is different and it might be good one. Like comedy there are alot of oppotunities which we can film and we can get ideas from films like badboys.

We are not using horror because you can ruin the concept of a horror, because it is easy to make it not scary and look fake. Also loads of people who do this coursework do horror, and so it is very common. Also it is probably the easiest genre to do and is not that much of a challenge.

Finally we had sport as an idea. This would be hard to as there arent that many film to get insperation from, and also it might be too hard to film, and it easier to make it look bad rather than make it look good. Also there are only so many camera angles we can do, and with film like goal, alot of it looks fake and is computer animated which we dont have access to.

So overall we are going to do a crime and gangster film because there is alot of insperation and we believe we can achieve a good mark by doing this.
